Interview: Rosie Day

Since her breakthrough performance in horror-thriller The Seasoning House, actress Rosie Day’s career has moved from strength to strength.

Best known for her tender performance as Mary Hawkins in Outlander, the 22 year-old has been named one of Screen International’s ‘Stars of Tomorrow’, and has worked alongside A-listers like Uma Thurman and Sarah Jessica Parker.

Her new project is Living The Dream, a sitcom about a Yorkshire family who buy a trailer rental business in Florida. Rosie took a break from her busy schedule to talk to us about filming in America, meeting her idols, and her new foray into writing.

Outlander: ‘The Battle Joined’

When we left Outlander‘s Claire Fraser, she and her daughter Brianna had discovered that her long-lost husband Jamie had survived the Battle of Culloden and may still be alive somewhere in the 1760s.

Although 1960s Claire has resolved to return to the 18th century and find Jamie again, the season three opener, ‘The Battled Joined’, concerns itself with the immediate aftermath of Claire’s return. In Outlander, to go forward we must go back.

Outlander Season Two Recap

It’s been a while since season two of Outlander – the time-travelling drama that sexes up the Jacobite rebellion, so you’d be forgiven for forgetting a few details. Whether you’re a die-hard fan driven mad by #droughtlander or a new viewer trying to jump on the Outlander hype train for season three, here’s a reminder of what happened in season two.

But first, a brief reminder (a meta-recap if you will) of season one: Claire Beauchamp, a former combat nurse who’s newly returned from World War Two, is visiting Inverness with her husband Frank. Claire finds herself transported back to 18th century Scotland after touching an ancient standing stone and narrowly escapes an attack by Frank’s ancestor, the sadistic English captain, Jonathan “Black Jack” Randall. Farfetched? Absolutely, but Outlander is just the right side of melodramatic, so let’s go with it.

The fantasy drama is one of the most popular shows ever made, and with every new season there comes a spike in online piracy. HBO’s flagship programme is the world’s most pirated TV show, and the seventh season has been plagued by hackers and accidental leaks from the company’s international offices.

Game Of Thrones: ‘The Spoils Of War’

The opening shot of The Spoils of War – a convoy of Lannister wagons holding gold and grain – is a disappointingly literal embodiment of the episode’s title. Thankfully for the Game of Thrones audience (and impoverished student reviewers), the rest of The Spoils of War is a lot more compelling than that.
